Fun Winter Fitness Activities for the Whole Family
As the weather gets colder and daylight hours get shorter, it’s easy to want to hibernate on your couch in front of the fire. It is extra important during this time of year to stay active to not only avoid the holiday weight gain, but to minimize the stress that comes with the season as well. It’s also important to keep your kids active during this time to set them up for healthy living as they get older. Here are some ideas for the whole family to stay active and have fun together:
Rake Leaves/Shovel Snow
While this may just seem like a necessary evil, it is also a great workout! Getting your kids involved will help keep them active during their off-season from sports, and help give them a sense of responsibility as well. Who knows, maybe a snowball or leaf fight will break out!
A great activity for all fitness levels, snowshoeing is a perfect activity for the whole family. Unlike skiing and snowboarding which can get quite pricey after lift tickets and rentals, you can buy or rent snowshoes relatively cheap, and you can do it anywhere!
Seriously, what kid (or adult) doesn’t enjoy sledding? While this may not seem like a workout because it’s so fun, it can be a lot of work getting back up the hill each time to slide on down. And, if your kids are small, chances are you’ll have to help pull them up the hill, so extra workout for you! Fitness and fun all in one; win-win!!
Ice skating is a great lower body and core workout. Anytime you’re on an unstable surface, your core has to work overtime to stabilize you. What’s more unstable than ice? Chances are you’ll feel muscles you didn’t know you had the next day, and the whole family can have fun in the process.
Indoor Rock Climbing
Being outdoors in cold and snow not your jam? Indoor rock climbing is super fun and relatively inexpensive. It’s safe for kids of all ages and there all walls to accommodate all levels. It’s also a great way to build upper body and core strength while breaking the monotony of a typical gym.

Crank up some MJ and JT and let loose! You don’t even have to leave your house to break a great sweat, burn some serious calories and have a blast!
